It's an idea from Tibetan Buddhism that you can create a being by using discipline to focus your thoughts. I've also heard them called thought-forms.

I've never heard of anyone being worried about theirs getting pregnant because they wrote too much mpreg, though. And that's saying something, since most people online who actually believe they have a tulpa tend to be... special.

Plus I think most people on the internet learn about tulpas through creepypasta rather than Tibetan Buddhism. So that adds to the... specialness.
