Sometimes, yes. Often no, but...adaptions are always going to be hit and miss.

The book (or game, because as dethtoll says, games have it horribly in this case) is always going to be around for people who want to give it a chance, so that's comforting anyway.

Of course it sucks when something you love gets made into a mediocre movie, but at least that movie makes people more aware of the source material, which they might then become a fan of.
