Me too. Some truly great fics are posted on ff.net (and some exclusively). So are some pieces of utter dreck. To me, that's a result of the size of the site. A site that big is going to contain a lot of bad fic, but good fic will also be there.

I don't read on that site anymore because of the potential for catching viruses (which nonnies in response to other secrets have given me tips for avoiding; thanks, nonnies! i just prefer not to go there because I am paranoid after catching viruses twice from the site).

What are these virus preventing tips? I haven't used FFN in forever, but now I'm afraid to after you said that. Is the site routinely infected or something?

Oh, man. That was so many posts back that I don't know where the thread is anymore to link you.

Basically something changed with how they do something on the site (insert the computer technical stuff I don't remember) and the upshot is that the ads on the site all potentially have viruses attached to them. :( I got a virus twice within six months directly after clicking on the site.

Some of the suggestions were to always be logged in so you don't get the ads and to do adblocker stuff. I know there were some other good suggestions that I don't remember because I just decided not going to the site at all is safest. Everyone was super helpful and informative. I really appreciated it.

Ah, well, I can always stay logged in then.

I was just thinking the other day about going back to read some Labyrinth fic, which as someone else in this thread said, is one of the older fandoms that still has good fic on there. :)

There's some good HP fic there that as far as I can tell is only on that site.

(Sorry I couldnt' be more help)

I always go to this site... https://www.fanfiction.net/adblocker.php to turn off the ads on ff.net before I got to ff.net. So I don't have to risk getting infected from a virus connected to an ad. If that interests you any. :)

Thanks!

It's a bit of a pain, but if you're really worried you can use the google mobilizer (google.com/gwt/n) Not as easy to navigate that way, but it basically makes the site text-only, and probably safer.

YES. When I was a naive teenager I saw an ad saying I had a virus... this wasn't a "known" virus like it is now back then, so naturally I clicked and let in download since, you know, I saw it on ff.n and surely they wouldn't have a misleading ad there... I mean, yeah, my fault for being a stupid teenager but still. They need to monitor that better.

It sucks that you have to go through something like that happening before you figure out what's going on.

hey don't feel bad

when I was a teen I felt for one of those "click the right color and win a prize" ads and even entered my e-mail and all
