Visuals you really love in TV shows/movies/comics

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Tell us about a scene of a work in a visual medium (film, tv, comics) that you really loved because of the visual the scene portrayed. Because it was really beautiful, because it conveyed the proper feeling or atmosphere so well, because it was really clever/funny/effective, because it was emotionally powerful, because it was viscerally affecting, etc.

I, for example, just get a huge kick out of that scene in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban of the trail of paw prints leading right up to Sirius Black's very human feet.

Another visual I love for a different reason: I have no words for how beautiful I find that scene in Doctor Who where Amy's floating in space while the Doctor holds onto her ankle.

The scene with Richie in the bathroom is still one of my favorite movie scenes of all time. I just love the coloring, music and cinematography and the fact that there's only one line of dialogue.

(If you haven't seen the movie, it is a spoiler. Also, CN for blood and self-harm)

Augh, yes. They always get some gorgeous shots out of those, too.

Speaking of Harry Potter, I loved the animation they used to tell the story of the three brothers.

Ditto. That was actually the first scene that came to mind.

I wasn't particularly enthused about the Star Wars prequels, but then I saw that poster for The Phantom Menace - with little Anakin and the Darth Vader shadow. It was an awesome visual that the movie in no way lived up to.

There's this bit in All About Eve where Bette Davis storms into the theater during an audition and starts throwing a tantrum, and when everyone she's actually mad at leaves, she turns around all eye-of-the-hurricane-like and calmly asks her boyfriend, Gary Merrill, where Eve went.

Gary Merrill is lying on a bed that's part of the set, and without a word he just sits up, looks around, looks under the bed, and shrugs his shoulders. I'm not sure if that's the type of visual you had in mind, but it's by far my favorite scene of my favorite movie. It's just perfect on so many levels--not only is it hilarious, but the way he's just passively letting her act out pretty much summarizes their relationship up to that point without having to come out and say a single thing about it.

Oh my god, I had given up on ever finding anyone who loved that movie (and yes, oh god that scene!) as much I did! *flails in joy*

The opening scene to Titus, where the child goes from playing war with toy soldiers in a kitchen to being carried to the middle of an arena full of soldiers marching like toys. Add that music and it's brilliant.

Take a look for yourself.

The projection booth scene in Inglourious Basterds. The slow motion, the music, their expressions - it's all very, very beautiful, considering its subject matter. Tarantino has explained it's a love scene for Shosanna and Fredrick, which adds to its beauty.

Practically every scene in Blade Runner is just striking, but I love, love, love the interrogation scene between Deckard and Rachael. I love it when she lights up her cigarette and the smoke drifts out across her face and we get that glimpse of her eyes.

In that same vein, Roy Batty's final scene in the rain is also breath-taking.

The scene in the Doctor Who episode "Vincent and the Doctor", when the Doctor and Amy and Van Gogh are lying in the grass and Van Gogh is trying to get them to see the stars through his eyes...*loves* Actually, that whole episode was beautifully shot.

And from the same show, the frost-covered TARDIS from Amy's Choice. So...fairy-tale and creepy and atmospheric and intricately designed and beautiful to look at.

Oh, and all the cars flying up out of the smog in "Gridlock". I get goosebumps every time I see that shot.

So many scenes from The Godfather qualify, but I especially liked the door closing at the ending. Predictable choice, since everyone likes and homages that shot, but I really, really, really loved it.

Really loved that bit from the first Harry Potter movie, with the green light blazing through the windows of Godric's Hollow when Voldemort kills Lily.

That scene in The Hurt Locker, where after the squad gets done with the climactic mission, and James goes into the bathroom in full gear to wash his face or something. Just...the massive contrast between the tiles and the fluorescents and the muddy gear left a big impression on me.

I was just talking about this upthread re: movies that are better than the books, but so many moments in Oscar & Lucinda. The whole confession scene- "Where is the sin?"- leading up to the moment in my icon is just so beautifully shot (and written and acted, I might add). And everything involving the glass church. Such a gorgeous movie.

Dunno if video games count, but FFXIII remains to be the most beautiful game I've ever played in my life. Every time I play it and get to Gran Pulse I feel obligated to share as many screencaps as I possibly can. Everything is just so gorgeous hnnng
I don't even really like the plot or the characters much, I pretty much own that game and its sequel just for the pretty graphics and the music

The Fountain

There's a lot of interesting visuals in this film, but the whole Death Is The Road To Awe sequence is just lovely. Of course part of that is the absolutely orgasmic soundtrack, but in general I just love the who sequence.

That bit from Half Life 2 where you cross under the bridge was my favorite part

Also that bit in anticitizen One when you're underground.

I was also really impressed with the lighting in Lowlife in Episode 1 and pretty much all of the Freeman Pontifex in Ep. 2
