Really good scenes in crappy episodes

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Have you ever had the experience of wanting to hate an episode of a show because overall it was really crappy, but not being able to say so without qualification because you loved a particular scene (or two, or three) in that episode so much?

Share your examples with the rest of us, F!S!

I feel this way about a lot of Charmed season 4 episodes in general, where I found the premise and a lot of the first acts really out of place or stale, but then how they handled the last third of the episode (the character progression, the resolutions) were really well-acted so I had to begrudgingly still like the episode (some prime examples being Paige goes back in time to quickly resolve a phobia, every Cole redemption episode, etc)

Came here to mention Charmed as well, although I was thinking of season 2's premiere, when Prue breaks down over Andy's death and not wanting to be a witch anymore. So much of that show just doesn't hold up well, but that scene gets me every time.

I found the Doctor Who episode "Boom Town" extremely boring and quite stupid, but the restaurant scene between Nine and Blon Fel Fotch was ten kinds of amazing.

Competitive Wine Tasting: The joke Annie tells about her joke telling class being cut off mid semester. It's just entirely clever, I love it. Also Fiddler, Please is hilarious and Jeff's line about three ways in a hot air balloon being romantic.

The First Chang Dynasty: oh god, Troy and Abed's goodbye is one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever seen on tv. Their faces holy shit I just can't deal with it at all.

Origins of Vampire Mythology: Jeff and Shirley's interactions in this episode are hilarious. Also the dean hanging out at apt 303 is great. But nothing else!

Introduction to Finality: Danny Pudi's acting as he's playing Abed trying to resist his mind eating him alive is so perfect that it's difficult for me to watch without getting very very emotional.

The Outrageous Okana is an insult to even early Star Trek TNG episodes, but damn if I didn't adore the shit out of Data's attempts to learn comedy.

The West Wing episode "Privateers" was incredibly boring, but the scene of CJ's trainwreck of an attempt not to crack up at Marion Coatesworth-Hay is GOLD.

I can't stand the Buffy episode "Dead Man's Party", but the bit where Giles is sitting in his car fuming "Do you like my mask? Isn't it pretty? It raises the dead! Americans." is one of my top favorite scenes in the entire show.

And...when I think on it, most of season 4 of Doctor Who qualifies. I really didn't like Ten's general downward spiral of "SUMTHING GOOD HAPPENED, BUT TEH DOKTAR'S ANGST EATED IT", despised the finale and the takeaway, and the only episodes I genuinely loved were Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Midnight, and Turn Left (I also really enjoyed Partners in Crime, but I'm certainly not under the impression it was actually a good episode). But in spite of that, basically everything Donna-related and Doctor-and-Donna-related in the entirety of the season up to the end of Journey's End was so utterly wonderful and huggable and glorious, it was like a vein of gold running through the muck.

Oh my god, THIS SO MUCH. I hate that episode, but love that moment in it.

Okay I didn't think it was entirely crappy (just melodramatic and over the top) but the best scene in The End of Time was the 11th Doctor's first appearance in the end.

My favorite scene from The End of Time was the six billion masters, followed by the Master making the Doctor listen to the drums inside his head, but yeah, that scene is a very close third for me :D I dunno, it kind of...made all the stupidness of that two-parter not-so-bad? Like, yes, okay, the Doctor was really miserable and really scared and bad stuff happened and his misery and fear got kind of ugly there for a bit, but hey look, it wasn't that big a deal! He's okay after all! <3

(Then again, I'm one of those people who is incapable of seeing the different regenerations as totally separate people, so others might feel differently...)

The six billion masters kind of pushed it over the edge to completely totally ridiculous ... kind of hard to just go with it when you can't stop wondering what that actually means if everyone is now the Master - all the different things they could have been in the middle of doing, did some die because of [a million different reason], were their little baby / children masters?, and if they're all him and they're all possibly moving around how can they be fixed? I guess we can assume that the Time Lord President conveniently fixed everything, but still...

Haha I was the opposite: the six billion masters was SO ridiculous it pushed me over the edge from banging my head seething about this stupid episode to "omg this is ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN' HILARIOUS" because I stopped caring about the episode making any sense whatsoever after that.

Plus, a planet covered in six billion John Simms, at least one of whom is dressed in a general's uniform? I think I know what heaven looks like now... :)

I'm not gonna lie, I'm still kind of mad that we didn't get to see a baby turn into the Master.

The infamous Risa episode of DS9... deserves its reputation for the most part, but I will never get tired of the look on Julian's face when he finds out that he's been dumped for Rom. Gets me every time. (I don't know if this counts as "really good" but hey, it makes me laugh.)

then again, Rom/Leeta actually turned out to be one of my favorite DS9 ships, so I'm a bit biased :)
