Posters here don't get that because some posters don't care about the Hogwarts houses. If I were to say "I dislike Hufflepuff" it wouldn't be because I don't care about those supposed traits but just because they never really seemed to do anything in the few Harry Potter books I did read or the movies. Whose to say the sister's boyfriend made the connection between the Hufflepuff house and those hardworking traits? Unless you're really into the books you're not going to make that distinction and I think you're looking wayyyy too into this.

But that would be a really stupid reason to say "Hufflepuffs are useless". There's no logic to hit being that they weren't as present in the books. It sounds far more like he was insulting the traits. I'm not looking way into it, that's just the sense I get from the way he said it--just as I would if it were from a different series I hadn't read.

Honestly? I wouldn't be surprised if he said it without really knowing what the house was like. People say stupid things for stupid reasons all the time. Could be that he hates the color combo or thinks the name is dumb.

Of course that opens up a whole 'nother can of worms. And as has been said, as a standalone comment that might not be a big deal, but it could also be indicative of deeper issues.

"Worthless and useless" strikes me as too specific a criticism to be attributable to "I didn't pay much attention to the series and found them boring" or "I don't like the color yellow." That would be more along the lines of your example, "I dislike Hufflepuff." It's a much shallower and subjective statement, whereas saying they're "worthless and useless" is an opinion with more thought put into it.

For me, it's not a matter of caring about the houses. I don't care much about Harry Potter one way or another, but the boyfriend sounds like an ass.

I think people on here can be too quick to assume that when people argue about something like this, it's literally about the fandom. But a lot of times, it isn't. It's about how the person expresses themselves. I've been turned off from people by how they talked about things like movies and books, not because of the opinion they expressed but because they sounded like a douche bag.

Tonks, Cedric, Hannah and Sprout were all Hufflepuffs, though, and Tonks was part of the OOtP (which otherwise seemed to be all Gryffindors).
