I only saw half a dozen episodes of the first series, but Winry was always getting kidnapped and threatened, and there were supporting female characters who existed just for Ed to be condescending to them (like the girl he makes fun of for dressing like a boy).

Plus doesn't Rose get raped? How is that better?

When you say Winry was threatened in Brotherhood, I assume you mean by the State to hold as leverage over Ed. Unless I'm forgetting something. She also thought of a way to get herself out of that situation and took control of where she wanted to be.

To tell the truth, I haven't seen it in awhile and forgot about that stuff happening when I wrote that comment.

But I do still like that Winry isn't a love interest.
