I like the book far better than the movie overall, but I agree with you on the point about the dwarves.

I suppose it's partly because the book was not only shorter, but also more centered on Bilbo than the movie, but I definitely did enjoy the extra character development when I watched it.

I just thought Tolkien didn't go to much effort to make the readers like the dwarves he didn't kill. (Besides Balin, anyway.) So although I think the book is fantastic I definitely don't think it's perfect, and I'm willing to let some things slide in movie!verse for the extra characterization and close-ness with the cast. In the end, I think it'll make the journey to Erebor more meaningful, too.
