I agree wholeheartedly. While I have childhood nostalgia for the book, re-reading it as a grown-up leaves me very disappointed.

I'm sorry the book didn't live up to your expectations or memories. :/

The book was still lots of fun and very enjoyable upon my re-read, but I do admit that I noticed the books faults more this time around. It didn't lessen my love for it, but it definitely made the movie more pleasurable for me.

*nods nods*

And I certainly don't hate on the book at all or look down on people who enjoy it, but the movie fleshes out the characters for me in a way the book doesn't.

I am super stoked about the second movie; I have a suspicion it will be the best because forest! And elves! And lost in the scary dark!

:)

Yea, I completely understand. The one thing that I think the majority of Hobbit fans can agree on is that the movie did right by the characters.

Me too! Plus, SMAUG! And Beorn!

To be completely honest I can't wait till the third film because of all the angsty death. As someone who loves the characters, I am confused by my own excitement.

Oh man, I love angst and angsty death, and I think the angsty death is going to mean more to me in the third film than it did in the book because I really really like the slightly different take on Thorin's character in the movie. It makes him a lot more sympathetic to me.

That's seemingly a common reaction to this Thorin! He is more likable than his book counterpart imo, because you see a different side of him; there was more focus on him too, which never hurts.

I remember being sad about the deaths when I first read the book, but I was more upset about Fili and Kili than I was Thorin. I was about 40 pages from the books ending when I saw the movie, so I finished up afterwards and was sobbing; it was so much more emotional imagining the movie versions in that situation.
