Winry and Riza had no significant emotional lives beyond their "men"

I'm probably not going to change anybody's mind about the Riza thing but Winry? What about Gracia and Elycia and Paninya and everything about her parents and her gradmother and how much she loves automail? Is all of that really about Ed and Al?

Look, you said that she has no significant emotional life not related to men and I pointed out that's untrue and then you moved the goalposts and argued something completely different so I'm not interested in back and forth on those terms.

I agree Winry was shortchanged by the final arc in the sense that she was barely in it, but that is once again a completely different argument. I'm sorry you were disappointed.

Okay, that's fair. I don't see her relationship to the Elrics as a flaw (to me the whole aesthetic of FMA is about the importance of personal relationships, which is why I don't have any fundamental problems with Riza/Roy either), but I would not have objected to seeing more of Winry having all kinds of awesome girl-centric adventures in Rush Valley, either.

Yeah, I do understand the impulse to beef up the women's relationships -- there's such a lot of fanwork about Riza & Rebecca Catalina's friendship, for instance, when they really only have 1 scene where it's not at all clear that they actually get along. I tend to see this more as a structural issue with the story rather than an issue with the characters themselves, but I understand it as a complaint.

Err, the entire series pretty much revolved around the brothers though. Winry wasn't a main character, she was a side-character. Of course a lot of her characterization is going to relate to Ed and Al.

As for Lust, well. She was a villain and they all kind of died in terrible ways.

Well, wrt Lust's death being sexualized, you have to think, ALL of the homunculi died in ways that reflected which deadly sin they were, so it rather makes sense that Lust died the way she did. It was part of the theme, so to speak.
