Would it be necessary to warn for this?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-18 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've started a fic for a very controversial pairing, and if I decide to post it somewhere, I'm not sure how much warning is necessary. Even though it's apparently a pretty popular pairing judging by Tumblr, I've come across several people going on about how morally wrong it is. I don't necessarily agree that it's immoral but I'll admit there are some unfortunate implications, and I'm not sure if I should include some sort of "yes, this is bad, but it's fiction, go with it" disclaimer. Is that necessary or should I just not worry about it?

Without knowing the pairing in question, I can't really say, but if it's something that wpuld potentially squick or trigger lots of people, like incest, torture or grey area when it comes to rape, then yes, warn. If not, tag it or put it in the summary.

I don't want to say the specific pairing since I know at least one of the people who's ranted about it being immoral hangs out here, but it's a gay character with someone of the opposite sex. Nothing else about it is squicky/triggering...they're both adults, no consent issues, no power imbalance, and they're not related. I don't personally see the pairing as 'wrong' but I do realize that the concept is kind of problematic. To me it's not so much about 'converting' a gay person as them realizing their sexuality is more fluid than they'd thought, but I do sort of feel guilty considering how few gay characters there are to begin with, and I know it's something that bothers a lot of people.

I don't see why you'd have to warn for this. First, it isn't really a trigger--it isn't abuse or violence or anything like that--and anyone worried about it would see it right in the pairing tag.

Well, if there's nothing squicky other than the pairing itself, and you list the pairing in the tags or the header to the story, then anyone who wants to avoid that pairing has enough information to do that. I don't think it's necessary to defend yourself more than that.

I don't understand why you'd have to warn for a pairing. Don't you list the pairing in the fic info?
