I really enjoyed the first anime, because it gave me the voices and the movement, but it also gave me other things: like the fact that where the manga tends to be rather emotionally dry and distant, the first Anime was pretty viscerally emotional. The mother episode and Nina expecially just got to me. That's the one thing the manga was rather lacking: emotional depth. Despite everything going on, it was told in a kind of a jokesy light-hearted tone, or as rather straight up adventure, rather than as horror, even when some things are really, really quite horrifying.

I was excited to see the Mother episode of Brotherhood after the disappointment of the Cornello episode (which pared the story down to 22 minutes and somehow removed any sense of tension from the situation.) But where every scene in the first anime had an emotional theme: joy, pride, love, fear, sadness, determination, terror, pain, pity, and it all came together to drive home how much it all meant. But in Brotherhood, the scenes were very bland and unemotional: Kids walking home from school talking about stew. And the ones after were also rather "fillery" Winry and Riza talking about how nifty automail is.

I got to the end of the episode and realized with a shock that far from being touched, I was bored at what should have been one of the key, dramatic, motivating episodes. I wouldn't have been if I were fresh to the plot, but I already knew the plot. There was no suspense to be had from that.

Also, I guess I don't see anime as being a richer experience than manga. They each have their story telling assets but one isn't better than the other and neither is particularly better at conveying this story.

Well, I never said anime was objectively richer or better. I just said it was to me. I'm not sure why we are really debating this since I've already made it clear that it's fine if you don't agree. But I enjoy anime more and we have a different preference that that's okay.
