If the plot is the point of a story and genders dont' matter, then why do people get all in an uproar by the suggestion of lady!Bilbo or somesuch?

Because canonically, Bilbo is a dude?

I mean, yes, some people are misogynists and don't want women in their ~hardcore dragon story,~ but this strikes me as a complaint on the faithfulness to the source material. A reinterpretation is one thing, but "The Hobbit" isn't just loosely based on the books, it is The Movie of The Book, and in the book...everybody's a dude. Or at least stated to be so.

Honestly...write a genderbent AU or something? Why would you purposefully change the way things are in the book? There's a bunch of media featuring female characters and it's getting more and more diverse. Contribute to that, if you want. But specifically changing the characters in an already-written book just to make it more ~balanced seems kind of dumb, especially if you want the genders to be Not A Big Deal.

If genders don't matter, then surely you won't mind if I genderswap all of your favorite female characters, right?
