Re: "Hype backlash is triggered very easily for me."

There's a difference between other people loving it, and crazy hype.

You've never had the experience of being interested in something but the constant barrage of "watch this it's amazing omgomgomg" eventually annoys you and sours the topic? Because I think that's a pretty normal experience to have.

Re: "Hype backlash is triggered very easily for me."

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but the OP is saying that a single person recommending something or talking about how they like it causes that kind of reaction. even in cases where the OP themselves is asking for the recommendation, so it's not even like it's getting pushed on them without their warning.

that is... kind of absurd.

I don't know, I've had friends that are just hype hype hype all the time and constantly asking if I've watched/read/whatever. One person can still ruin it, imo.

But yeah, I don't know OPs specifics so maybe they are just being absurd. I just think fingals was being unnecessarily idiotic.

The OP said they specifically ask for recs knowing that their "hype backlash' will be triggered and they won't be able to enjoy the rec. It's stupid.

I know we all have our off days regarding reading comprehension. So, you tell me, in what language does "I ask people what their favorite movies/books/shows/bands are" not imply that the OP should not at least expect "wholehearted recommendations."

If you are asking people what their favorite things are, what do think is going to happen?

"Oh, my favorite movie? Probably 'Hot Fuzz.' But, you shouldn't watch it. Sure, I love it, but I don't think anyone else should have the pleasure of viewing the things I love."

Come on. You ask about my favorite things, expect for me to recommend you watch/read/listen to them and see if you like them yourself.

When I ask someone what they like it's because I want to know what they like.

I am not necessarily asking them because I am looking for something to watch/read/listen too. (That person and I may not have the same taste at all.) I may just be interested in someone else's likes and dislikes.

There is a HUGE difference between one friend going "OMG OMG OMG HYPE HYPE HYPE" over and over again when you didn't ask for it and one friend going "Yeah, I really like X because Y!" a SINGLE TIME because you ASKED them what their opinion was. Seriously, that doesn't even compare. Being put off by the former is understandable; the latter, silly. It also makes you seem a wee bit snobbish imo but I could just be reading that weird...

Nor was fingals being idiotic at all, they were being perfectly reasonable. And they raise a good point - OP, maybe you should examine that. It might make fandom a lot more fun, honestly.

Well sure. Homestuck.

Of course, then I read it and realized everybody else was right and the only person at fault was me for not doing it sooner.

I think it's too bad though that lots of people get permanently put off of Homestuck because of all the obnoxious fans. =/

And it's not really for everyone, which is complicated by the fact that it takes so long to actually get into it properly. I certainly encourage people to give it a try and for me it was more than worth it, but I don't want to be that fan who makes it so a person never wants to hear the word "Homestuck" again in their life.

You are literally the first Homestuck fan who's made me consider reading it by saying this.

Honestly, I want to get into it just to follow what people are on about, and because a lot of the fanworks that I wind up seeing are kind of cool. But as you say, it takes so long to get into it.

Then again, I'm the one who'll rec Dresden Files at the drop of a hat, but follow it up with, "Yeah, the first one's okay, it takes him a few books to get away from the episode private eye schtick, so the action doesn't really start going until book three or four. And then in book seven things really get going!"

I think it's really worth it to get into it. YMMV, but you've little to lose, right?

And I've never read Dresden Files but that sounds pretty much exactly like Homestuck. Gets good in Act IV, gets amazing in Act V. XD

Well, time is a big thing for me. I'm lousy with time management. It's one reason I don't play a lot of video games--too easy for me to lose a few hours there.

hmm, yeah, that could be an issue once you're getting into it. The nice thing though is that once you've caught up it takes very little time to keep up with canon. Most updates only take a few minutes to read.
