Well, I was reading and writing sex scenes at 12. I'm thinking at that age kids should know what condoms are used for and that you should be using them. But, I think I've read (on F!S and other places) that some people starting reading erotica at 10 or younger. Would kids that age have taken sex ed or learned about condoms from parents yet?

Sex ed at the "insert tab A into slot B makes a baby" level is Year 5 at both the schools I've worked at, for what that's worth, so a 10-year-old wouldn't necessarily know about condoms but would at least know what sex is.

we had our first sex ed in year 9, so 3-4 years after girls started having periods (so 15-16 years old). they also split the class into two by gender for the rest of our school YEARS.

While I don't think 'think of the children!!!' should be your first thought while writing porn, I kind of want to address the 'learned about condoms from parents' part...a lot of people have parents that refuse to ever talk about safe sex, and some people grew up with parents that simply weren't willing or able to parent us at all. And in the age of abstinence-only rules all across the South, you can't expect schools to be informative either. I did get fairly comprehensive (but far from perfect - no support for queers) sex ed when I was 15, but that was too late for some of my classmates. Before that, all I knew about sex was picked up from novels and women's magazines. The latter were more helpful.
