There's nothing wrong with enjoying someones enthusiasm about a topic that you aren't familiar with. I don't see how that's a negative thing, even if you don't try it. (You aren't obligated to try whatever it is, either.)

Now the 'hype backlash' thing is a bit confusing, because it sounds like if someone so much as says, "Hey, this thing is good" that you then write it off as something you don't want to try or wouldn't enjoy. Am I misinterpreting?

It's meant in the sense that hearing someone talk about it is fine, but having someone go "OMG you have to watch it!" and then asking me multiple times at a later date if I have is irritating. So I try not to make promises.

Oh, yea, that is annoying. People who are too insistent about things like that can really ruin any interest you might've already had.

what's even better is that when you did actually watch it and it wasn't everything they touted it to be and you make the fatal mistake of saying so and they work even harder to convince you that you're WRONG! And that you watched it wrong and that you're doing it wrong and you need to give it another shot!

i get irritated by that too, and have been put off by series because of it.
