so according to tumblr, the Le Mis characters being really skinny is ~*~fat erasure~*~ (actual quote, minus the tildes) and is horribly offensive, and “but they were supposed to be literally starving” is no kind of “excuse” because “there are also fat starving people!!1”

What. We aren't talking about people in the modern day who've been eating greasy fried stuff or overly-processed foods that are nothing but empty calories, and which have made them gain fat while still being undernourished. We're talking about Revolutionary France, where these people simply DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SUFFICIENT FOOD TO BE HEALTHY. I just can't even with these people.

(Although minor nitpick - Les Mis isn't set in revolutionary France, it's set during the Bourbon Restoration)

Honestly I'm not even an actual fan of the book/movie/play, but I follow people who are and one of them reblogged this prize piece of headscratcher out of bafflement that this was apparently a thing in some parts of the fandom, and from what little I myself know about the setting I assumed it was Revolutionary era, so mistake's on me I guess. I think my viewpoint on the matter still stands though lol.

It was. France had several revolutions. Les Mis is set during the 1830 one - this one rather failed. The 1848 one succeeded.

Revolutionary France refers pretty specifically to the 1789 revolution and the period immediately after it, though.

But yeah, France during the period didn't... didn't really have a hugely stable government at any point. And periodic revolutions of one kind or another were definitely a feature of the period (throughout Continental Europe in general, really).

would you credit it I actually (on LJ) once got dogpiled for not "admitting to my thin privilege" when I had made a post about losing weight by reason of couldn't afford food (I was going through a period of lots of bills + getting screwed over on my hours at work) and specifically noted in my post that it was NOT a ~thin privilege~ issue, because I legit couldn't feed myself. Which is why I have no problem believing that this isn't a parody of anything but in meant to be serious.
