What's the problem with the "how to be a fan of problematic things" person?

Not defending, I found HTBAFOPT rather... dull and annoying and a re-tread of shit most of us have all heard before.

i don't hate the person who wrote it. i know nothing about them as a person. i just hate that article because of shit like this:

bigotry is also boring and gross. But everyone is just dying to keep that in the script.

because trying to get people to at least intellectually engage with controversial issues such as prejudice by portraying it in the media is boring/gross.

do not ever suggest that people not take media “so seriously”, or argue that it’s “just” a tv show.

like have you been to tumblr? have you been anywhere on the internet? sometimes people DO take this shit too seriously. if what they are doing is not taking shit too seriously then where are we drawing the line here

there is still no reason to focus exclusively on unequal or problematic fictional worlds and narratives.

there is no reason social justice activists should focus exclusively on Things From My TV That Enrage Me either yet here we are.

wouldn't an activist approach to this, if you were REALLY pissed, be to NOT support things that are "problematic" with $$ instead of continuing to give them money and continuing to be a vocal fan of them? unpopular opinion because it means you can't shut people down via the internet without sacrificing fandom

i just picture this kid rolling around in a large shitpile going "UGHHH THIS IS SO DIGUSTING" ensuring that everyone looks over and judges him to be a righteous individual because he is acknowledging that the poop in which he's currently saturating himself is, in fact, gross. except imagine he also had to subscribe to netflix to get the poop or something i don't know
