I've seen a lot of anons talking about giving up writing fic because they don't get the kind of response they think they deserve. Some of them say they're writing original fic, some say they stick what fic they do write in a drawer. Usually it sounds like a plain old scare tactic to me, trying to shame people into commenting. I definitely take it with a grain of salt.

Honestly, they can do what they want. It doesn't make me more or less inclined to leave comments or kudos, and somehow I doubt I'm ever going to be hurting for reading material. If they aren't happy with their readers, then, you know, they shouldn't post. Having them hang around and be all bitter about it only will bring the rest of us down.

People who write for recognition should not be writing.

a) they'll be disappointed when they don't hit that imaginary goal line
b) they'll be insufferable if they do
c) the stories they write to keep the admiration coning in will not be very good compared to those of people who write because they have an idea that they want to see written

Recognition is validating, though. It's not wrong to want and enjoy validation - I feel like expecting and demanding it is a bad road to get on, because the universe is not always going to deliver, but it's entirely natural to have that human need and if it's not being met in fandom? No doubt the writer will try to find a better way to get it. That might be writing original work, or it might be spending more time with their friends and family.

Having them hang around and be all bitter about it only will bring the rest of us down. Yeah, God forbid those pesky authors harsh the squee of the readers!

da

And yet when they say they don't post their fic anymore, you don't believe them...

well, when they actually STOP posting their fics, then it's believable. but to hold their fics hostage (and it isn't a far cry from 'I need 20 comments/feedback or I won't post the next chapter'). So if they keep threatening not to post and then they keep posting...they're just liars and why should anyone believe them?

Except that the anon doesn't say anything about holding fics hostage, just that they take with a grain of salt authors giving up writing or saying they don't post anymore.

As for writers who do threaten to hold fics hostage if they don't get N reviews but keep posting anyway, how hard is it to notice it? No need to "take it with a grain of salt" just need to check their "requirements" and the number of reviews: requirements are either met or not met.
