When I was younger I considered enlisting in the Marines. At the time I was a skinny chick with no upper body strength to speak of and being also nearsighted I was afraid I wouldn't pass the physical. My dad's a former Marine and was always very critical of me so it would have been intensely humiliating to wash out. In the end I couldn't face up to the probability of failing so I gave up on the idea. I like where my life's ended up but whenever I see that uniform I can't help wondering what could have been.

I always wondered "what if" about joining the military, but my fat family hates the military and also didn't have any problem raising me to be just as fat as they are (which, I did, and am still trying to claw my way out of that mess) so even if I could have gotten over the familial rage/disappointment, there's no way I would have ever been fit enough.

*I do not mean this as sarcastic commentary -- it's the god's honest truth. And yeah, I'm responsible for my body now, but it's hard getting over habits that have been ingrained since childhood.
