Except that lots of people do have sex with strangers without a condom being involved. Is it unsafe? Yes. A dumb idea? Absolutely. Unrealistic? Nope. Unless the characters in question are canonically not the kind to take any risks, it can happen.

A lot of criminal show fandoms don't always use condoms. You'd think that people who deal with blood, gore, drugs, needles, etc would practice safe sex? Or am I a crazy person?

There's often a gap between what people know they should do and what they actually do. I've known cops in real life who've made some poor choices, especially when they were starting out and in the cowboy stage of their careers. Also, people with risk-taking personalities tend to take risks in more than area of life.
