If you look at something like the Hunger Games, that type of female character would not have made it to the big screen just a few decades ago. Progress is slow, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
The protagonist would probably have been a young man, considering the genre and the theme. And probably a bit older than 16, too, because teenagers wouldn't have been depicted as empowered, either.
But, like it was said above, Hollywood is currently playing it safe by filming franchises that already have a big fanbase.
I do not see anything inherently wrong with adapting classics to the big screen, though, without trying to modernize them too much.
