Cool story, bro.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's cool. We balance each other out, since I give no shits for anything in fandom that isn't fanfiction. :) We all have our preferences.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I'm the same. I think about the fandoms I like, and how great it would be if I liked fanfiction, because I'd have a whole new world of material to explore for it, but...I just find so much of it tacky. Maybe I've just been unlucky with recs, but it feels to me like every popular fic I read is grossly OOC and full of ridiculous fan plots.

It probably doesn't help that I'm in the BioWare fandom, so it's incredibly rife with Mary Sue PCs and people who don't seem to realize Shepard has an actual personality that you can influence, and s/he's not just simulacrum for whatever you imagine s/he is.

And maybe it's just me, but there seems to be an undue amount of "I'm going to add rape as their backstory" in it, party members and PCs alike.

But I digress. I don't like fanfiction, and I've never read a truly good fic that wasn't a one shot, but I wish I did like it. Fandom would be more fun.

I used to be able to read any kind of fanfic, but lately I just don't have the patience for it.

But yeah, it's totally fine to enjoy fandom the way you want, don't worry.

Huh. Well, that's too bad. Maybe you just need to get used to it? Pretty much anything in fandom is kind of an acquired taste...

But if you don't like it it's totally fine. No one has to like all the same things.

I'm kind of the same, don't fuss too much about it.
There was a time (waaaay back then) when I read some fanfics, but only ever could stand to read Harry Potter fanfics for some reason. Not because I was such a huge fan, but because I didn't really care that much about the books and still wanted to see the universe explored I guess.

At some point Draco in Leatherpants got boring and I sort of stopped and after that I never felt the urge to pick up a fanfiction again. It's not something I really miss, though I guess it could be fun.

Fandom!Secrets is full of asshurt fanfic worshipers. If you don't like them you are a illiterate who can't apreciate the *'¨¯¨'*•wonderful word of writing*'¨¯¨'*•. Be careful OP.

...and yet no one seems to be reacting badly to this secret except you. :/

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Read the first motherfucking reply.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Cool story, bro" is another way of saying "I don't care". That's not exactly hostile, even if it's pointless on a place like F!S.

But you might actually be that anon, trying to incite something.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you dont care, why you do even reply?.Let alone that you are using unfunny and overrated memes.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Er...I wasn't the one who said it. I was telling you that those saying it weren't attacking them, just being kinda rude.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Watch your language and calm down.

~I can't see the characters the same way when there's just words.~

That's never been a problem for me, personally, but I can see where you're coming from. Maybe, just don't try to hard to see them as exactly the same? If you enjoy reading anyway, think of it as just a story, without judging it against the canon - maybe even a complete AU, to get yourself used to seeing these characters in text form while maintaining a little distance.

Or go the other direction - ask in your fandoms for recs of fics that are accompanied by screencaps and/or art.

Just a couple suggestions if this has become a mental block that you *want* to get past - but if you'd rather spend your time in parts of fandom that you actually enjoy, there's really nothing wrong with that either.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, that's one thing I like about fanfic - that the medium change and it being 'just words' allows for a wealth of different fan interpretations of a character. I cry at fandoms where 'IC' has become some kind of uber-strict fanon gospel (which invariably doesn't even make sense in terms of canon, lol.) I prefer seeing a range of different views on canon. But yeah, I go through long periods of losing interest in reading fic, even if I'm still writing fic. I just can't get into it sometimes.

I'm also the mod of an active community in a book fandom, one that's never had a TV or movie adaptation and I assume never will. So, there's that. Search for your book fandoms on AO3 and Dreamwidth - it's depressing how many people think book fanfic only exists at Yuletide when, helllllo, some of us are out here all the time.
