Does Tyrion even fit this? He's pretty vulnerable from the get-go, and what makes him awesome isn't just his snark, it's watching the strategic way his mind works, even with the odds against him on both sides.

But no. It's a fun trope because it's a fun trope and because you can wring a lot of humanity from it.

I agree with you re: Tyrion. I think a huge part of what makes Tyrion popular is that while most of the other characters in the books find him laughable or embarrassing or limited or whatever, it's the *reader* who realizes he's so cool.

Tony and Han are cool in canon, not just in a fourth wall breaky kinda way.

+1, Tyrion is cool for readers but not for the other characters in canon. He's also my favorite out of these three, although I enjoy Tony too (mostly when he's being whumped).

I think Tyrion's probably my favorite, too, although Tony comes in a close second. :)

If someone hadn't already pointed this out, that was exactly what I was going to say.

Tyrion might be sarcastic and intelligent but he is by no means a "rogue". I think OP has never read ASoIaF.

I agree with all this. I'm on Clash of Kings right now and I love how Tyrion is a step ahead of people who are actively trying to screw or use him. Most of all, I love that *I* don't see his machinations coming. I like that feeling of being on a character's side but also having that detachment of "WHOA, you magnificent sneaky bastard, I did not see that coming!"

That, and I just love seeing a disabled character so enmeshed in every part of life: sex, booze, food, dynastic intrigue. It's so counter to so much of what people expect or many narratives deliver, where disabled people appear at all, but GRRM also doesn't deny that it's just a huge pain in the arse to live in a body whose size/functions don't match the way the world is built.

The whole "everyone underestimates Tyrion and he takes full advantage of it" thing reminds me of I, Claudius...
