First date ideas

Well? Where would your first date be anons? I'm pretty much sick of restaurant dates because they make me super nervous.

I think an awesome first date would be a video arcade. Because that's how I roll. But maybe not ideal for most ladies.

Whatever you do don't go rock climbing. I did it and embarrassed myself.

Hiking. Paintball. Laser tag. Theater. Dancing. Wine tasting. Murder mystery party. Poetry reading. Museum tour.

Kinda depends on what's available in your area.

I default to movie+dinner because that's easy to set up and find time for. And I haven't gone on many first dates. But dates or date ideas that I think would work as a first date:

Museum. There's stuff to talk about without the awkward "so... What's your favorite movie?" stuff. Plus it's easy to cut short or drag out depending on how things are going.

Concert. Especially random local shows, since they tend to be cheap, have more downtime to talk, and don't really put pressure on to stay through the whole show.

This probably is a bit much for a first date, but one of the best dates I ever went on was renting a 2 person jetski for 4 hours, and cruising around the bay.

If it's a date with a stranger, I'd probably just want to go to a coffee shop or for a walk so we can have a conversation and see if it's worth meeting again.

If it's someone I already know a bit... maybe a museum, but something like a science museum that's fun and interactive and feels casual and you feel free to talk to one another in a normal voice.

Yeah tell me about it, I hate restaurant dates. Trying to fit a fat sushi roll in your mouth and having a conversation = fail, and not very attractive.

My favorite dates were going to the laser tag/paintball and arcade. Also walking around downtown and just trying out things.

Don't go to an amusement park. The rides and atmosphere cause adrenaline rushes that make you think you're having a better time than you are (y'know, so you don't leave before spending $10 on a hotdog), so you can think somebody is an awesome date when really it was the triple loop-de-loop on that last roller coaster.

I'd say mini-golfing or ice-skating, though I did have a fun sort-of date just wandering around downtown stores :P

Agreed about the video arcade suggestions.

Other than that... Miniature golf or bowling? I know nothing about dating, but both of those sound fun to me.

The whole movie + food thing isn't bad imo, but it isn't the most exciting, either.

That said, I suggested miniature golf and bowling, so I have no room to talk.

I always liked going to either the arcade or mini golfing. I like playing skeeball, so I usually ended up playing that and we'd have a little competition over it.

Walking around town is good, pick up coffee and walk around the park.

Kind of a casual visit to the zoo would be nice. i get so nervous for dates it'd be a great distraction

Coffee, maybe a bookstore. I like the museum idea in theory, but I have museum habits that are not conducive to dating (spend hours there, don't like talking to people while I'm looking at things), so be prepared for that.

It really depends on whether you know the person already, though? Because if it was someone I already knew, I'd be most comfortable just having dinner at home and watching a movie I/we'd already seen before, so we could make snarky comments about it.

I always use a coffee shop, it's usually a pretty good atmosphere for having a conversation and you don't have to eat anything. Most coffee shops serve tea and other beverages too, so. Also they tend to be open late and have a lot of people around

In thread summary

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
To sum up the ideas I thought were best here:

- Nothing too strenuous, as you might embarrass yourself or your date (it's also not conducive to talking.
- Nothing too sedentary, as you'll be a loss for what to do if you don't like the person
- Nothing you're really, really interested in doing, as the actual event might convince you you're having a better time with this person than you thought
- Not a restaurant or a movie, as it's difficult to communicate

The best suggestions I've seen are video arcade, mini-golfing, and the zoo, I think. Active enough to be busy between lulls (or if the person is a complete drag), but slow enough to allow for conversation. Fun enough to remain entertained, not so fun that it's distracting you from forming an opinion on your date. Also, they're fairly unique as far as first dates go.

Mini golf (or putt-putt as we call it). More laid back with built in conversation and it gives me a good idea of someone's personality and if we mesh. It's important to me that someone can laugh at themselves and doesn't take a novelty game too serious. Plus I just like our local mini-golf park. :)

Restaurant dates are boring, in my opinion. But I won't mind going on one for like a third or fourth date, just to slow things down. But as a first? Dull.

I'd say a museum. There's a lot to talk about rather than just about yourselves and it won't make things very awkward. I'm a really shy person and I've done it. I have to tell you, it made things easier for me when there's something eye-catching and interesting to discuss.
