Huh, I've always thought it was kind of aspirational appreciation: people wish they were that snarky/cool/sarcastic/whatever, or genuinely believe that they are already that way. I feel like fandom in general tends to be full of the personality type that values intelligence, but has trouble dealing with people on the whole. So they like characters that have similar problems but deal with it in "cool" ways, and are rewarded for it (if not by the narrative then by the fandom attention), because it makes them feel better about themselves.

I like Tony and Han because I am that person. Well, I may not have piles of money like Tony, but Tony and I are definitely sympatico.

Yeah, it's not so fun when your ex-boyfriend breaks up with you because you're "too Han Solo."
