I wholeheartedly support assisted suicide and euthanasia. I don't care if I had all the pain medication in the world available, because I'm not looking forward to being barely able to move or slowly losing my mind to dementia or some other disease.

Some of my elderly relatives withered away for years, saying out loud that they wanted to die already, and I've decided that if I ever end up in that condition, or I'm diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I'm going to kill myself.

I don't think that's such a horrible thing at all. There's nothing wrong with death, it's just another part of life and there's no reason to prolong one's life if they are suffering

Oh and I also want to add that dementia runs in my family, my grandmother and great-grandmother got it and it was depressing to witness. I really don't want that to happen to me and I am terrified all the time that I'll start going senile early, like in my 50s or something. I already have a really hard time remembering things (my short-term memory is basically non-existent at this point)

Several people have had it in my family too, luckily they all got it pretty late in life, but it has definitely reminded me to exercise and keep using my brain, since those things seem to delay the onset by several years.

YANA. My (long-term) boyfriend and I made an agreement that if we were ever to lose our minds to dementia or Alzheimer's (both of which run in our families), we'd rather die than forget about each other.

I don't understand this "keep everyone alive as long as possible!" mentality; sometimes one's quality of life is so horrible that death is a more pleasant option. As long as they've got all their affairs in order, nothing should stop them from being able to die when they want to.

Yes, no-one should be forced to live any more than they should be forced to die. If you make your medical will known when you're still of sound mind, the doctors should obey that when you have reached that point where you no longer wish to live.

quality of life is subjective tho

FTR my advance directive to my family is DO NOT LET THEM TAKE ONE LOOK AT ME AND DECIDE I AM A WASTE OF OXYGEN JUST BECAUSE GOD BROKE THE MOLD. Etc.

/pwdanon who does not want to end up unconscious in, near, or around a hospital in my country without a family member immediately close by

I wasn't trying to imply a third party judging somebody else's quality of life, rather that if somebody else feels that their own quality of life is that bad, they should be able to choose for themselves (if they can) when they die, and doctors shouldn't get to object. I certainly wouldn't advocate that doctors get to decide who lives and who dies - nobody should get to play God with other people's lives.

I hope no doctor ever does that to you, nonny. Everybody has a right to live c:

In pretty much all the countries where it's legal, they ARE doing that though. Check out what happens in Netherlands when a patient isn't considered worth saving anymore. Or in England, where if you're old and terminal they just sedate you and leave you to die of dehydration. Hurray for "assisted suicide."

Are you from Netherlands by any chance?
