It's funny, I was thinking that some of the ships would be basically the same -- like, most Roy/Hughes is, by necessity, backstory so there's not necessarily much difference. But the flipside of that is that a huge part of my perception of Roy's sexuality is based on 'oh by the way he was an orphan raised in a brothel' which is sort of a throwaway thing that happens in the 20th volume of the manga? So if you don't HAVE that, I don't know how you're writing the same Roy...

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. That some characters will probably be fundamentally the same and that others will have some pretty big hunks of backstory and characterization that differ.

I wonder if anybody's ever written like a five things or something that that puts both versions of a character next to each other, or a fic that looks at how something would play out differently in the two canon worlds. That could be really cool.

I can't imagine that, like, Winry changes very much. Or Hughes. Whereas Roy and Riza have vastly different backstories, Ed has different things happen to him, the world building vis a vis alchemy is different, etc.

I haven't really come across anybody who LOVES both canons enough to be separately fannish about them? I'm sure they exist, I just haven't seen them. But I'm sure there's a way to treat them as separate/parallel universes that could be interesting. Or writing Roy & Riza's mangaHood backstory into the events to the events of the first series.

I kind of think of them as parallel universes in my head. Where some events got changed and sent the characters on different paths, changed some people more than others. I really really like both, but I've got to be honest, I fangirl over Brotherhood way more.

I've only really read the manga + seen a dozen or so eps of first anime & random relevant Brotherhoods, so my brain doesn't really need to process first anime. But I don't know how I'd feel if I had run across that first, the way a lot of people did. That's why I find discussions in the fandom hard some time.
