Their second trip took them to a universe/world that was not yet made - so it was all dark and stuff. Then Aslan came and created Narnia and everything in it and basically it's whole universe and stars and suns and weather when he sang. It was intentional.
It was also implied that Narnia wasn't the only world you could 'travel' too. I've always wondered about the others.
