'Het dominated' is not the same thing as having a bias toward female characters, as fairly commonly this happens because of love and fascinating with the male character, not the female. It's still often a bias toward male characters. From what I've seen, Damon/Elena vs. Stefan/Elena is not about Elena most of the time. It's about the male character you prefer. I discussed OuAT a bit in a comment below.

That a female character has to be the main character to get focus much of the time is telling, considering that in many fandoms it's side characters that form the bulk of fannishness (see Teen Wolf).

In any case, just because a narrative isn't female/minority dominated doesn't mean that it doesn't include vital, significant female characters or minorities and these are continually ignored or downplayed in favor of white male characters in fandom. Yes sometimes female characters or minorities lead a narrative to the point that they're so prominent they can't be ignored, but if it's at all possible to ignore them? Fandom can generally be found doing it.

There will always be exceptions, but most of the time fandom favors white men, basically.

Well, I don't pretend to know what people's reasons for shipping are. When there's a lot of female as well as male characters, there tends to be a lot of het. In canons with a majority of female characters (like Sailor Moon, Maria-sama ga miteiru, or Lucky Star) there's a lot of femslash. In canons where the majority of the characters are male, there's a lot of m/m slash. Seems simple enough. Fandom reflects the canon, generally.

I don't know what you mean by "bias toward female characters", but yeah, when there's a main female character, people tend to identify with her, and fight about which of the guys she should be with, from what I've seen. Actually, the same happened in Harry Potter, and Hermione isn't even the main character.

In any case, just because a narrative isn't female/minority dominated doesn't mean that it doesn't include vital, significant female characters or minorities and these are continually ignored or downplayed in favor of white male characters in fandom.

Because the white male characters have the most screentime, characterisation, and interaction between them, I'd say.

I also think determining which characters people like from what they are shipping is a fundamentally flawed technique. I don't ship all (or even most!) characters I love, and I doubt most people do. I'm also not in fandom for everything I love, so there's that, too.

Then, of course, there's the fact that slashers will enjoy and look for slash. That I ship Sherlock/John doesn't mean I don't also love the female characters on the show. I ship Bond/Q after Skyfall, but I adored both Eve and Sévérine. I just don't ship het in fandom. And I don't think I have to prove that I love characters by writing fic abut them.
