Second, she ran out to her car to get her gun, went back inside, and ended up firing the warning shot ... the judge decided that she could have simply driven off instead of going back inside, so he won't let her invoke Stand Your Ground.

OK, this seems to be the problem. I'm not American, but due to this part she could never claim self-defense in my country either. After she run out to the car, she was no longer in immediate danger and could have left or called the police to help her get her things. And if her ex had followed outside to threaten her, then shooting would have been defending herself. Going back to the house with a weapon turned her into an assailant.

She clearly wasn't thinking straight at the moment, and the sentence looks like an overkill, but she can't claim to have been only a victim here.
