I am a complete Jackman stan, but yeah, I agree. His voice was Not Great in this. Mostly I found myself cringing a lot at his singing and thinking "Oh, not again. Please just talk for a few minutes."

But OTOH I think the praise is more for the acting aspect of acting-while-singing, and he worked his ass off there. He was acting and belting out, raw to the bone about how much his life sucked, live to the camera, for however-many-bajillion hours it took to get footage enough for a 3-hour movie, which he was in most of, while sopping wet and muddy. So, hell, that's worth something.

Agreed on the acting-while-singing. I especially liked his "Valjean's Soliloquy" -- not the best I've heard vocally, but definitely one of the most emotionally powerful.

Yeah, I'll definitely give him credit for the acting portion of it. I thought he had great chemistry with pretty much everyone on the set. It's just - IMHO - his singing was so bad, it trailed all his good aspects down into the mud with the rest.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind it so much if there wasn't so much praise being lofted around. It's starting to feel as if my ears are off, which - as a music professional - just leaves me very baffled and confused.

I'm not saying it renders other people's opinions invalid.

It's more like a large part of a musician's skill is their ear, and if I suddenly can't tell the difference between "good" singing and "bad" singing, something that's been hammered into me for years and years and years, yes, that worries me. Despite all rational subjectivity, I can't help but feel that I'm suddenly worse at my job.

His singing wasn't necessarily bad, it was just not right for the character. Then again, Alfie Boe is just about the only one I've ever liked as Valjean, vocally, so I'm probably biased.

I do think he was trying too hard to be Colm Wilkinson, though.

-sighs- I'll just repeat what other's have said - his singing was, from my understanding, objectively good. He wasn't off key, etc. But after that? It comes down to personal tastes, and just because *you* don't like it, doesn't mean that it won't fit straight into other people's sense of taste.

I cringed through all of "Bring Him Home" and wanted it to be so over. I was okay with most of his other singing in the movie, but THAT specific song nearly killed it for me. Christ.

Ugh, add me to the list of people who HATED him singing Bring Him Home. His other songs weren't so bad, but that part was where I literally clasped my ears and looked to the floor ( involuntary defense mechanism against loud noises since childhood)
