The problem is that Jackman is a baritone trying in vain to be a tenor. I can sing most of Valjean's songs, and I'm an alto, so I can't imagine what kind of strain he was putting on his voice for that.

Wait, I remember the discussion from a couple days ago about Crowe being a baritone in a mostly tenor part as well. Did they really cast two baritones as two tenors?

Tenors and higher sopranos don't tend to get a lot of "mainstream exposure" (which is to say, movie and television, not broadway or opera). My singing teacher once explained that the reason you almost never hear someone singing high in a TV show is because the producer's don't think it sounds "real". Therefore a lot of actors who can sing are usually baritones or mezzos. It simply may have been too difficult to find actors of the high talent expected that also matched the vocal keys for the characters.

Personally I would have cast unknowns, but the way A-listers were after parts in this movie, others wouldn't have a chance.
