I don't know how Derek thought he could trust any of the people he chose for his pack, except that they're all emotionally/physically abused outcast teens who crave belonging and he thought they would be easier to control. WHOOPS.

Derek did more than just "not let Scott die". He rushed in and risked his own life to save Scott's. And that IS a big deal.
