This is like avoiding cocaine. Everyone who's done it tells you how amazing it is, how wonderful it makes them feel, and they say, "I'm not hooked, see? You can totally just do it every now and then and have it not be a problem." But all the while you're like "no thanks," because you know, you know, that that shit's addictive, and while your friends may have dodged that bullet, you're damn near sure that you won't. You know yourself just that well.

But then, one day, for whatever reason, some sinister facet of yourself crawls out of its hole, unfolds in the back of your mind, and whispers, "why the hell not? You'll be fine." You ignore it at first, but it's insistent, and soon you're nodding along. "Why the hell not, indeed!" So you join your friends, and at first everything feels the way it always has, but then...then it hits you. In the midst of the euphoria comes the terrible realization that you were right: you're addict material. Soon, you're twitching in an alley and sleeping on a bench and selling your kid sister into prostitution for a line.

It's all over but the kitchen grease.
