I watched this show up until Season 3, then stopped (at the time because Netflix, then when later seasons came up I'd lost interest). Didn't even realize there was a fandom for this. I've asked a few friends (non-fandom), and some tell me Season 3 is a good place to stop, others say to keep going...?

(I don't mind spoilers.) Is this show (and/or fandom) worth getting back into?

It depends. I personally love the new characters introduced during season 4, especially the new ladies, and like the call backs to characters from previous seasons. I feel like there's a nice bit of development for some already established characters, some of which is negative and that adds to the series for me. (I like it when characters screw up or act like dicks, so ymmv). Some of my favorite episodes are from the later seasons and some of the inter-team stuff is really good from those seasons.

On the other hand I've heard plenty of complaints about the change in feel of the show from seasons 3 to 4 and a lot of people I've talked to thought the new plotline was odd at best. Personally I think it gets a little too big for it's britches and doesn't quite fit with the tone of the first three seasons. There's a lot of stuff left unanswered and in my opinion, the new villains just aren't as good as Helen.

Personally, I recommend the last two season just based on the new characters and some of the development.

As for the fandom, I've not seen much of one around but from what I've witnessed it seems pretty tame. I admit to not looking to hard for fans, but what I've seen on Tumblr/AO3 leads me to think it's a fairly chill fan group.

That's 'cause you're looking in entirely the wrong place. Fandom is on LJ, and barely shows up anywhere else. There's a little bit on Tumblr, pretty heavily skewed towards Connor and Abby and the later series but also covering 1-3 pretty well. You want activity and fic, it's at LJ.

Is Stephen popular? Yes. Is he a woobie? In my opinion, no. That would very often be Becker, but YMMV.

If you're a multishipper, you'll fit right in. Large part of the fandom prefers S1-3, by and large, but generally likes to mix up the characters from all 5 anyway, so almost nobody gets left ot. Fic on LJ is of a high standard, on the Pit, not so much. Fandom is welcoming, providing you're (general 'you' here) not a dick.

SA- Thanks for the tip! Are there any journals/communities in particular you would recommend for the fandom? I'm fine with all pairings or just gen stuff, if that helps.

Best place if you want activity is Primeval_Denial. There's fic, chat, graphics challenges, lots of different pairings (mostly slash, but the ladies get a fair share of attention too).

There's a DW version of the comm, but it's basically an outpost for when LJ falls over.

Personally, though I enjoyed S4 and 5, it didn't make me feel the way the rest of the show does. Too many new (though likable) characters in too short a time, I guess, and the shift away from the old ARC didn't sit well with me either. It's worth watching, though, and the finale is great. But if you're hoping for a resolution to storylines that began in S1-3, you'll kind of be disappointed, since 4-5 goes off in a slightly different direction. It works, but in some ways it feels like a different show. That and the loss of all my favourite characters tended to dampen my enthusiasm somewhat, but the fandom kept me going

The LJ fandom tends to embrace the new characters of 4-5, but not the canon storyline so much.

Hm...I think I'll give it a shot. Losing then gaining too many characters was part of why I lost interested/never regained any (what on earth possessed them to do that?), but with mixed feelings about the original show/feeling of the first three seasons, I might give 4 and 5 a shot to see if they're any better.

To be fair to TPTB, a lot of the character losses and other stuff were out of their hands (actors wanting to leave, ITV cancelling the show/the budget being smaller after the long hiatus). Some of their later decisions stemming from this weren't of the best, like dropping a lot of minor plot lines. On the other hand, they did at least try to give exiting characters some sort of resolution even when it was difficult to pull off, and largely avoided killing more of them in 4-5.

I tend to see 4-5 as a spin-off, because of the different feel it has. I find that works pretty well for me :)

For some reason I keep getting into shows with drastic character changes during the later parts of their runs. o.O
