.....no. It's not.

First movie (it's hard to get good screencaps apparently):

Compare that to the secret image? SOOOOOO not the same style or design. I like the original far more than...that. B/

You've got to take into account the changes in anime art styles over time, though. The first movie was released in 1995. That's 18 years ago.

Take a look at any anime from the early 90s and even in realistic series and movies, you'll see greater simplification compared to 80s animation, with broader strokes of color and more easily animated shapes. Because of the advent of computer-aided animation, later 90s and early 00s started to move away from the simpler shapes into more finely detailed shapes as well as subtle colors and lighting, and now with almost entirely computerized animation, anime in the 10s tends to be fainter, finer, making use of shapes and colors that would have been a huge pain in the ass to do with hand-painted cels.

tl;dr It's basically the same hair style. The only real difference is color and 18 years of industry change influencing how it's presented.

.....I see a much more DEFINED face in teh original. This new image? She's too smooth and too pretty. That is an unfortunate result of the 2010's fascination with moe types and overly simple/pretty types. Kusanagi wasn't even meant to be that back then. I can't stand it now.

The original wasn't "simple." Simple is now. And it sucks.

Color is better yes, but they have gotten lazy with many character designs nowadays.

The hair style is also not the same. Similar, but not the same.

Yeah, I do have to admit that moe has totally influenced face shapes to become simpler in all styles, but I can't exactly say that this redesign is "simple" in all ways. I definitely think 90s were simpler over all, because it had to be.

Much as I love the original movie, those are pretty huge "tufts" compared to today's version, and that was for animation ease. The new version is scaled back in the sense that the hair has a lot less body and finer "tufts", because they can animate that as easily now as anything else. Same hair, different way of presenting it. All anime hair these days tends to have a lot less body and lie more realistically on the head, even in totally exaggerated cartoony shows with spiky hair and whatnot.

I really don't think they've gotten lazier with designs, either. There were always fads in character design no matter what era you look at—only six faces was especially a problem in the 90s. Moe didn't cause that, it just influenced way those six faces look now, and even realistic series with greater variation get influenced by the trends. Noses are smaller, faces are flatter, eyes are rounder and tsurime are less pointedly pronounced.

And I do, definitely, miss the face shapes from the first movie. It's seemed like every incarnation of Motoko since has had a smaller and smaller nose, and I want that first big honking nose back. But that's style change for you.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm okay with 18 years of change because what's different doesn't parse to me as a HUEG HOMG CHANGING EVERYTHING, it just looks like a 2013 take on the 1995 design. I don't necessarily LOVE all the changes that have happened over 18 years, but I doubt any of it was intended as Totally Changing Motoko.

They still look awfully similar, especially in the eyes.
