Re: "Pet parents"? Seriously?

I have a pet, who I lavish love and affection on, and have always had pets. I just don't think the experiences are actually comparable beyond the obvious "feed 'em and give 'em shelter" thing. Do people really think that teaching a pet tricks is comparable to carefully watching a child's development?

Um, I have pets too, and they may not be like human children to me because they grow up way faster, can't learn to talk, and are a different species and therefore act differently...but "teaching them tricks"? Seriously? That's what you come up with? That's the extent of how you see your pet?

I don't really know what to say to that. Your experience is obviously quite different than some other people's.

No? I'm just saying that a pet is an animal. A child is a growing person. Parenting is a really difficult thing because you might ruin a PERSON for LIFE, and comparing it to taking care of an animal is kind of absurd.

If you don't care for them right you could ruin a pet for life.

Yes. And that would be horrible.

Yeah but so? It's not like parents are some underprivileged minority and there's any harm to come from pet owners calling themselves parents if they so please. Just...I don't get what the big deal is or why it's apparently so offensive to you. Who gives a damn?

Edit: oh, and I'm sorry but if you really think you can't ruin a pet for life by treating them badly, you clearly haven't been to any shelters or seen any rescue animals.

I'm not like horribly offended or something. I just think it's ridiculous. Didn't realize people were going to be so up in arms about it.

I only have shelter/rescue animals. My current pet is a rescue from a puppy mill. I'm aware it's possible to ruin animals for life. But there is a difference, if in nothing else that an abused human being can live for possibly 100 years and cause way more harm than an abused animal can. Please tell me that you guys are aware of that.

Yes. Don't worry. We are not completely stupid.

1. One who begets, gives birth to, or nurtures and raises a child; a father or mother.
2. An ancestor; a progenitor.
3. An organism that produces or generates offspring.
4. A guardian; a protector.
5. A parent company.
6. A source or cause; an origin: Despair is the parent of rebellion.

Words have slightly different meanings depending on the context. We happen to be using definition 4. Note that it doesn't specify what the parent in question is a guardian or protector of.

Source. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/parent)

I'm not angry or anything. It just gets under my skin when people rant about word usage without checking a dictionary first.

Same anon

Sorry. I meant to say that I'm not any of the other anons in this thread.

I think you just have a very different outlook to your relationship with your pet than some people. I don't teach my pet tricks, I teach him the proper way to behave. And yeah, I carefully watching my pet's development. Obviously there is a difference between a child and a pet, but not as big as one as you're making out.

I have three cats and a dog. I also have a daughter. Guess what - while i'd save my daughter first in a fire, i'd sure as hell go back for the pets. Yes, having pets is a lot like having kids. Trust me.

Where in my post did people get that I'd neglect or leave my pets in a fire or that I don't love them as much as you guys do?

All I'm saying is that oh forget it that other anon is right, neither the twain shall meet.

gotta be honest here if my mom told me that she loved the cat as much as me I'd feel really horrible because I'm her fucking CHILD and it's a CAT.
