Yeah, there are a lot of people out there who, from my point of view are really fucking weird about their pets. I think maybe it's just the human race having two sorts of people on this issue and never the twain shall meet. I get excruciating second-hand embarrassment over animals being treated like children. My sis on the other hand gives her dog her surname and buys him clothes cause that makes her happy.

I can't stand it when people humanize their pets. They are animals and treating them as such does not exclude treating them lovingly or making them a part of your family. But then again, some people treat dolls like they were real children, so at least it's not quite at that level yet.

On the topic of surnames, I thought that's just something people do as a helpful identifier of their pets for the vet and stuff? When my dog or cat go to the vet or have meds, the vet always calls them "Sophie Vogel" because that's the name we gave our dog and it's my sister's surname.

This. They put our last name with our cats/dog's name so they know who the pet belongs to and, heh, who to bill. Just easier that way.

Yeah this. The vets and also the city hall want the family's last name on their paperwork for our dogs. Duh.
