Yes, because it's controlling a child's ability to tell someone if they're being abused by their parents. My abusive parent kept us deliberately isolated and used to complain about me calling another relative 'too much' (ie. when I needed someone outside the house to speak to). That was on the family phone - I never had a cellphone. We were never allowed to have home internet either; not because we couldn't afford it (we were perfectly well off) but because someone was deliberately trying to keep us isolated. If I had been able to use the internet, maybe I wouldn't have taken so long to reach out and realise that what was happening was abuse.

So yeah, it's not a safe power for anyone to assume. If I heard of anyone doing that to a kid, I'd immediately assume they were doing it so they could abuse the kid. Plus it's deeply harmful as an act in itself - destroying social ties that might be vital to someone's emotional life.

But because you have a bad experience with it does not make it wrong. People can abuse ALL punishments, ALL of them. And I know you took away something bad and traumatic from your experience and punishments, but that's because it was used abusively. Had it not been, I don't think you'd feel the same.

Almost no one in this thread has agreed that those punishments are abusive. If I were abused by being sent to my room and locked there for days at a time, I might eventually develop the feeling that the punishment is extremely cruel. I'm sorry that it happened to you, I really am. But please, please try to separate the idea of the punishment from your experience with it.
