Re: Weird misogyny aside, is this worth reading?

Yes seriously. Because Dresden as a character says some sexist things and can act sexist, but that's a flaw to the character, and he almost always suffers for it. Unlike WoT, the world he lives in is not set up in some "women are a mysterious, scary other species" way--Harry's just a jerk who doesn't always get it. And the women in Dresden Files are all very different and very human, instead of all being flat depictions of the same three types of lady-characters in different clothing.

Sorry, that was a little rude of me. I apologize.

We obviously don't agree, and probably aren't going to agree, about to what extent Wheel of Time is misogynistic, or how good its characters are. Or, for that matter, about how good Dresden Files is or how good its characters are. I don't think that the world is set up the way you make it out to be in WoT, and I think you're being horribly unfair to the female characters of the series. And I think that, on the whole, Wheel of Time is written much, much better than Dresden Files. I don't know how it's that much of an improvement to have women who are straight-up stock characters from central casting (the no-nonsense cop! the spunky kid! the mother who'll do anything for her kid!) Then again, it's possible I'm being unfair to Dresden Files, I stopped reading it several books ago, and don't remember it that well.

Still - I think you're being unfair to WoT, although it is flawed. And deriding WoT while holding up Dresden Files as good and some kind of lofty ideal of how to do it right... it just doesn't make any sense to me.

I think we are at odds, then, because "stock characters straight from central casting" is pretty much how I remember all of the characters from WoT, not just the women. But as you said with Dresden Files, it's been years since I read them--I think I stopped somewhere at book 7 or 8 and couldn't remember enough of what had happened by the time the next one came out to get back into it. A lot of the world set up just made me uncomfortable. I could be remembering wrong, but they all left a bad taste in my mouth. It could just be a case of YMMV, because I think that while the characters in Dresden Files may fit tropes (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), they all come off as incredibly human an nuanced. I wouldn't really hold it up as a lofty ideal, but if it was a question of, "hey, I've got some time, what series should I read," Dresden Files is usually my answer anyway, unless I think I can shove a comic book into their hands.

But as you say, we might just need to learn to agree to disagree. Everyone's got different tastes.
