Re: OT - kids and cars, tv, phones, computers
(Anonymous) 2013-01-26 11:28 am (UTC)(link)I grew up almost exactly as your describing (I never wanted to buy anything and I was an only child, so my allowance was sporadic. I'm 26.) and nothing in the above discussion struck me as odd. Technology is cheaper and more omnipresent. And even if you sound like a better parent than either of mine, that's about more than what your kids have "gotten" vs "given". There have always been the kids with everything and the kids who had to work for everything they had. It's not a modern issue, it's more that the communication landscape is changing faster than we can establish a new normal. When I worked in retail all the low-income kids were paying for their own voice and data plans.
