That was one of the things that bugged me about the movie too! I hadn't thought so originally, as I came across the film first. After reading the book, the film didn't feel 100% right to me in terms of Waldow's 'look'.
Don't get me wrong. I love the book and the movie with an equal (ardent) passion. It's just that you make a good point.
Mark. Mark McPherson. Sweet lord on a cracker-jack pogo stick. Dana Andrews could not have been more perfect. Also, major, major, major crush on the character. But that's neither here nor there.no subject
I do know that as close an adaptation of Robert Bloch's "Psycho" the movie was, I was surprised that Norman Bates originally resembled Ed Gein more (maybe heavier, but middle-aged with thinning blond hair) rather than the vulnerable and soulful-looking Anthony Perkins.
Then again, that may well have made the reveal MORE unsettling.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-27 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)But when you get a chance, read the book. Then read it again, because Waldo's narrative voice is just so deliciously...I don't even know. Childish? Narcissistic? Campy?
My final paper for one of my English classes was about Waldo as the simultaneous femme fatale and representative "queer" character.no subject
