I don't know how specific to Avengers this secret is, but... I think the OP is more referring to fan snobbery towards fans who aren't in those fandoms, or in the same factions. I mean, when I was in the Harry Potter fandom, people would go berserk if anyone under the age of eleven said they were a fan. But... they were. Yeah, maybe a fan who was young and didn't get the more mature stuff, maybe a fan who didn't ship Harry/Draco or Ginny/Voldemort (then again, neither did I and I was in the actual fandom), but they were still fans in their way.

I may have completely missed the point, though. IDK.
