To be honest, I don't think I came out of LOTR shipping anyone (except Eowyn/Faramir, because after all the shit those two went through, they deserved someone good and unpretentious and honourable and brave to love them, and because I will forever love Faramir for taking a chance in the Houses of Healing).

But I always massively adored Gimli and Legolas' incredible friendship. When Legolas chooses to remain in Middle Earth to stay with Gimli, and they go off to explore the caverns and forests together, and then Gimli goes into the Undying Lands alongside him ... I mean, I don't mind people adding a shippy element to it, because why not, but the friendship itself does so much for me.

Their relative looks never really came into it for me. They sailed off into the West together. I was pretty satisfied with the strength of caring that spoke of.

Are you talking about the movies or the books? Because I had seen the movies before I had read the second and third book and I came out of RotK shipping Eowyn so hard with Merry. I was confused when she was suddenly with Faramir in the end of the movie.

I liked Faramir/Eowyn much more in the books. The movies gave me nothing in regards to this ship :/

Books mostly, yes. Though I sort of liked the idea of movieverse Merry and Pippin nominating themselves chaperones for the pair, and Aragorn and Eomer looking bewildered (bookverse, too, but in bookverse Pippin's sharing duty with Beregond).

Eowyn and Merry I loved as shieldbrothers and comrades in arms. I didn't really ship them? Could have been because I'd read the books first, though, and was rather attached to Eowyn/Faramir because of it. (That could also be why I didn't like the Eowyn/Aragorn thing from the movies, but I think that was more because ... well, Eowyn didn't need that, why does Eowyn need an unrequited crush on a king, Eowyn was fine being badass without having a love interest for the movie, thank you).

This, so much. I'm not even slightly active in Tolkien fandom anymore, but Legolas/Gimli was my first platonic OTP, so, yeah, I can't really ship them 'cause it would ruin their friendship for me. Nothing against people who do ship them, but I'm glad to see a few other people see them as best friends.
