I'm not sure what you're getting at, really... but anyway I think that fandom is basically the same as it's always been, we're just more visible than we used to be. Even before the internet, geeks were super obsessed with TV shows/games/books/whatever, went to cons and embarrassed the actors and creators (and themselves) with overenthusiastic invasive behaviour, were snobs to those on the outside, etc. And it's always been the minority who are like that, but by whom the entire fandom is judged.

So. That's the nature of fandom. Or any type of subculture actually.
