She's basically the Joss Whedon's Firefly of Doctor Who companions: someone brimming with potential and attractive personality traits who was written out too early in an infuriating manner before her character had time to run its course, i.e., neither screwing up or developing in a direction people could complain about, nor progressing to a satisfying natural conclusion.

So, in a nutshell, Donna is a perfect storm of elements that all combined to make her deeply missed, profoundly likable, wronged by outside forces, devoid of characterization problems, and torn from the audience in an utterly unfair way at the height of her popularity and awesomeness.
