It does seem that every few months someone stumbles on fandom for the first time and wigs out over it. But I think it's passed a bit of turning point in the last few years, where whenever that happens, for every "omg there are people like this?" there's someone else going, "Welcome to the internet."

For better or worse, fandom isn't in it's own box anymore. I'm pretty sure it's one of those things that the more people know about it, the more they are used to it, until it becomes merely geeky instead of horrifying.

But until that happens, I'll keep my hobby away from my real life.

Eh, I think certain aspects [certain kinks, and possibly rpf] will keep it from being too comfortable a thing for most people...but Kinda yeah. Like I said, I'm just pointing out where the OP could be coming from instead of saying what my actual feelings toward it are.
