Heh, seriously.

I was just rereading the Lorien chapter with my kids and I was rather impressed by just how insanely boring Elf-life was. Apparently it consists of walking around doing basically nothing all day but thinking, but yet being content. Now I can see why that might be nice for a few days if you've been out in the rough trying not to die of cold and cave troll, but, except for occasionally getting to chase some orcs within their borders, that seems to be their lifestyle year in and year out. And that's what they are putting all their effort into defending.

Now the Men were fighting and trying to secure lands against not one but two invasive enemies. What's more they were keeping the enemy's eyes on them, protecting the world around. They were out there getting dirty with it. All without magic. So hell yes, men are awesome.

Oh god, exactly. I still remember Aragorn being a massive asshole at the Council, going all 'Oh well, what Gondor does isn't that important because we fight against orcs as well in the North!!!'. Aragorn is just an ass throughout the books in general, honestly.

Honestly, a lot of what the Elves do is probably a normal life dragged out massively through a hugely long period of time, which is probably why I find them immensely boring and I don't understand them in the slightest. Hngh. And yes exactly. And Men have no idea what happens or where they go when they die, but they throw themselves into battle anyway and are fighting awesome.
