Fandom is a lot more fragmented than people think, interest myopia is really pervasive and it's really easy to just focus on the aspects you are really into and just forget about the rest.
I've been a Buffy fan since forever, but I never came across the spuffy-bangel cold war. For some reason, I never shipped anything on BTVS, and thus was nevr part of ship wars and the like, I just liked to talk about the plot, Buffy and how cute Tara and Willow were (I think that last one was shipping, now that I think about it)
